The second chapter “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me” of the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie published 2009, is about the poverty of Junior´s family and his dogs dead because of his illness.
In the following I am going to analyse the stylistic devices, Junior´s feelings and his emotions. The first enumeration is on page 19(“He was lying on his bed with red, wattery, snotty eyes.”l.3) and this sentence draws attention to Oscar´s eyes. The next enumeration in ll.7-9 has the effect to focus the readers attention to the dog´s illness(“[…]he started vomiting, and diarrhea blasted[…]and he had […] and kicked and kicked.”ll. 7-9). The last stylistic device on this page is an enumeration again and it emphasizes that the dog was more important than his family for him(“[…] than my parents ,grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and big sister.”ll.11-13). In lines 15-18 on page 20 is an anaphora (“Nothing. Nothing.Nothing.”ll.15-18) and it highlights that he couldn´t do anything to help his dog. On the next page in ll.1-3 is a parallelism and anaphora(“I wanted to punch him[…]. I wanted to punch[…]. I wanted to punch him[…].”ll.1-3). This sentence shows Junior´s fury and emphazies it. The next stylistic device has the same effect and is a climax(“I was hot mad.Volcano mad. Tsunami mad.”l.5). In l.7 is an oter anaphora and in ll. 8-11.(“He […].He[…].l.7 and “I wanted to[…]. I wanted to […].”ll.8-11). This stylistic devices show that Junior is very angry and desperate because of his dog´s dead and their poverty. On page 23 is an anaphora again (“She[…]. She[…].ll.2-3). and in l.10 is a simile (“Lika a pro.”l.10). This simile creates a vivid mental image of Junior´s dad. The second last stylistic device on this page is in l.17 and is an anaphora(“It sucks to[…]. It sucks to[…].” l.17). It spells out that Junior´s and his family´s poorness makes he angry and he is strung out from. In l.25 on this page is an enumeration (“So, poor and small and weak[…].l.25). It describes Junior and because of this enumeration you kow how he feels in this situation. Last but not least is an anaphora on page 24 inll.5-6 (“I[…]. I[…].ll.3-6). It works like an little a comparison between Oscars emotions and felings that “he was relieved”(l.3) and Junior´s sentiments (” But not me. I[…]”. ll.5-6)
To Junior´s emotions and feelings you can say as aforementiond that he is very sad about his best friend´s dead and angry about his poorness(p.17 l.8-10 and p. 21 ll.9-11). He is very desperate and he thinks that he deserves to be poor because he is an Indian(p. 23 ll.17-22) .
