Dear diary

Dear diary ,

today I found a cartoon of Junior. Normally I love his cartoons, because they are very funny and cool, but this cartoon has shocked me. It has shown Junior in a different way. In a ugly way. He has drawn himself with too big hands and feet, very skinny and his eyes were lopsided. Moreover there was a speechbubble which showed that he lisps and stutters. I think he sees himself too unattractive and I heared all too often how he said that he is a bastard and when I saw Junior’s cartoon I didn’t know what I could say too him. So I asked how he felt and why he drawed the cartoon thus. Junior responded that he has drawn the cartoon how he looks and he thinks that it is ok that he looks different. Also he said that he wishes or it would be easier to live in the rez when he would be prettier, but it is not so and he tries to live with his look. At the end he told me that make fun and draw cartoons about himself are the only ways to cope with his disabilitys. Certainly I get worried because of Junior, but I think it is  good or helpful for him to draw and furthermore he has me and I will always stand his side and I try that he forgets his problems by doing funny thing with me.

If Junior stayed at Wellpinit High School just nothing change. He also get bullied like always and Rowdy also would beat some kids up like the months before. The only thing which could change is Juniors mind maybe he just decided it later to change school or he just regret his decision his whole life.He will never met Penelope or somebody else from his new school.Later in his life he would get an badly paid job when he has luck.I think he also get addicted from alcoholl later on like his father. But because we know he decided to change school and that everything is better then staying poor all Speculation what would had happen if ….. is irrelevant.

Gordy’s Diary Entry

Creative 12: Write a diary entry by Gordy after Junior has asked him to become friends

Dear Diary,

I usually don’t write into a diary, but I think it is a good way to organize your thoughts. Today  Junior,  a boy from my school,  asked me if  I want to be his  friend. I directly said, that I was not gay, but he didn’t mean it that way. He wants me to be his casual friend. I was surprised. No one ever asked me something like this before, but I agreed. I mean, he is quite intelligent and seems to be nice and interested in school, just like me. I do not have any friends and this was never a problem for me, but I think it can have some benefits to have a friend. I am not forced to study alone and can actually really talk to someone except from the teacher. And to be honest, it would be quite nice to have a friend, who stands behind you and who does things with you. In school, I have always been alone and now this is my possibility to not be lonely.

Hopefully,  I don’t mess up this chance.

Gordy

Education

Analysis: Education

In the following I am going to analyse the education in the USA and the Indian reservations. In that case, I will have a closer look at the differences between the educational system at normal schools in the US and at the reservations.

Educational System:

The educational system of the USA is seperated in three categories: Elementary (Primary) Schools,  Secondary Education and Postsecondary Education. The school system is  different from state to state, so there are plenty of different regulations. And it is even more complex,  because except from the public schools, there are many private schools, too. Most of the students go to public schools, where the parents do not need to pay for, because they are funded by the public money. 10% of the students go to private schools, where the parents need to pay for. Both types of schools are from Primary School to University.

Education for the Native Americans:

The educational system for Native Americans is very problematic. A long time, there were only boarding schools for Indians, whose intention was not their education, but the divestment of their identity. These schools were used by the state to transfer their plans of assimilation. Most of the students were forced to stay the whole year in the boarding school and there were even instances, in with students were sexually abused. But since the year 1928, there were build schools in the reservations themselves, where the Indians could go to. But the proportion of Indians who go less than 8 years to school was very high.  And not until 2008, the premier minister apologizes to the students what circumstances were at the boarding schools.

Conclusion:

All in all, the educational systems at normal schools and at schools for Native Americans are very different. In case of that, the decision of Junior to change schools was probably reallly smart of him, when he wants to get a good future.

Summary Chapter 22

The novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie and published in 2009 by Klett, is about Arnold Spirit, who suffers because of his physical problems and who tries to change his life by changing schools.

At the beginning of the chapter “Red Versus White”,  Arnold mentions that his reader probably thinks he is fallen in love with white people. Still, he tells us that this is not true. He loves his sister, who sends him postcards and has made a New Year’s resolution to finish her book, which is about hope,  by the summer. He is glad, that his sister is happy and tries to realise her dreams. And he loves his parents, because, though they may have their flaws, they talk to him and listen to his problems. Furthermore, Arnold gives us his opinion about white families and the white community in Reardan. He marvels at how people can live inReardan and still be strangers. Indian families are so close and know everything about each other – even their shoe size. But even if Arnold criticizes the white community, he is realistic. He still knows thatliving in Reardan is better than Wellpinit. He tells us about what he thinks is the best thing about Wellpinit: his grandmother, who is really tolerant. She is accepting everyone, even homeless and discouraged gay. Also, all the Indians at the powwow knows her. Unfortunately, she has recently passed away. She was struck and killed by a drunk driver and the last thing she said was “forgive him” – meaning, forgive the drunk driver who killed her. So Arnold forgives Gerald, the Indian who struck her with his car and who got sent to prison for eighteeen months. At the end of the chapter,  Arnold laments his  grandmother’s death, especially since she didn’t even drink alcohol.

I am sorry for uploading it that late, but our internet didn’t work properly at the weekend.

Basketball in the US

Basketball in the US

Baskteball is a very famous sport in the US with many different teams. The teams consit Of 5 players in the field and seven outside which are changing with the players in the team. The teams try to throw in the basket and when you are outside of the semicircle you receive 3 points and inside 2. The team with the Most points of the end of the 4 quarters wins the match. In the US are the first plays in a group. The two best teams of the group are in the Playoffs and when you lose in the playoffs you are out of the tournament. When you are high and live in the US it a perfect famous and popular sport dir you.

Summar:Chapter 20

Reindeer Games

In chapter 20 Junior is starting to play Basketball. His father tells him to play, but Junior thinks he is to bad and his body is not perfect for a Basketballer. After that Juniors father tells him an example of his life and says that he have to dream big to get big.Junior trys it and thinks that he become a bad player in the c -Team.When the Coach stepped onto the court and say that they have to run 100 laps all players run,but many players quit or give up.Now Junior must be bettet then 12 guys.2 weeks later Rearden high shool had their First match against Juniors old shool.Junior gets  hitted two times and the last time from Rowdy. Rearden lost this Match but Junior wants to try ist again.

Analysis: Mr. P

Mr. P is Junior’s math teacher. He becomes part of the novel in chapter four and five, specially in chapter five “Hope Against Hope” where Mr. P talks to Junior and convinces him to change school for the reason that Junior is special and very smart.

At the end of chapter four the character “Mr. P” is described as “a weird looking dude” (p.38 l.25). There is also a cartoon on page 39 where the reader gets a more detailed image of Mr. P’s physical appearance. He is drawn very thin and small but with a very big head in contrast which is similar to Junior’s appearance.                                                         A funny thing about Mr. P is that he sometimes “forgets to come to school” (p.38 ll.27-28) and because of that he “sometimes teaches class in his pijamas” (p.39 l.4). So I would interpret the character as a forgetfull and awkward person but his mistakes make him likeable. This is also why the pupils like him; he doesn’t expect much.             Relating to the conversation between Junior and Mr. P in chapter 5, the reader learns that Mr. P has still a bad conscience because of his past, when he helped to try to kill Indian culture. The fact that he visits Junior at home while being suspended from school lets me conclude that Mr. P is a teacher who really cares and worries about his pupils. He is a sympathetic and helpfull person.

Analysis chapter 24

The text at hand is an extract from the book “The Absolutely true Diary of a Part-Time Indian” written by Sherman Alexie in year 2007. The analysis is about chapter 24, which has the title “Valentine Heart”. It is about Junior´s father´s best friend Eugene and Junior´s feelings about this happening.

The first stylistic device is on page 174 in line 17 up to line 18: “My father went… My mother went…” , which is a parallelism. The author wants to emphazise that Junior´s parents don´t get grips with the death of their friend. A repitition can be found on page 174 in line 19: “(…)booze and God, booze and God, booze and God”. It shows that the whole life consists of booze and god. Furthermore the parallelism “I needed books. I wanted books.” (p.174, ll. 23) explains that Junior needs books to get grips with the death of Eugene. Another important stylistic device is on page 176 in line 1 (“And I drew and I drew and I drew(…)”), which is a repitition. It clarifies that drawing cartoons is for Junior the only way to handle the situation. The next stylistic device (” I was mad at God; I was mad at Jesus”, p.176, l. 2) is a parallelism and shows that he can´t believe in anybody anymore. Therefore another parallelism is on page 176 in line 7 up to line 8: “I wanted to find (…) I wanted to know(…)”, which is also a repitition ( I wanted(…) I wanted(…)”). It emphasizes how big his grief is about the death . After that a repition can be found on the same page in line 2 up to line 3 (” We lost(…) we lost(…) we lost(…)we lost(…) we lost(…)”). This intensifies that the Indians lost everything. The next repitition on page 178 in line 10 up to line 11 (“killed (…)killed (…) killed (…) killed”) shows that junior wants to kill everyone because of his desperation. Another important stylistic device is on the same page in line 29 (” Mrs. Jeremy was an old bird”), which is a metaphor and it expresses that Mrs. Jeremy teaches at Reardan for a real long time. Furthermore a repitition is in line 10 up to line 11 (” I would(…) I would(…) I would “) It intensifies that Junior did many things if he would be stronger.

In conclusion in my opinion it is difficult for Junior to handle the situation and he is searching for methods to get grips with the death of Eugene. Also his parents don´t know what to do and they process the death in different ways.

Creative 16 (diary entry by Junior´s father)

Dear diary,

normally I don´t write my feelings into a diary but now I don´t know with which person I could speak. A family´s good friend namend Eugene was killed by bobby. Bobby was Eugene´s friend. I can´t understand how you can shoot your friend!? I know, they both were drunk but this isn´t an excuse! I´m so sad about this incident and I don´t know how I should deal with the death of Eugene…At the moment I drown the pain in alcohol. Deep down inside me I know that it isn´t a way. Junior´s grandmother was killed by a drunk driver and Eugene is gone because he and his friend were drunk. Oh, wait. What is if someday i kill somebody because of my drunkenness?! I couldn´t forgive myself! And… Oh my God! If I go on like this maybe one day I will end like Eugene, so I will be killed. Then my familiy would be alone. Possibly I could die tommorow… What have I achieved in my life until now ?! Nothing. All what I did in my life was drinking! I think I have to stop drinking to protect my family and myself. I hope I will succeed. I will tell you more in a few days or weeks.

Magazine article Basketball match, creative work

It was a friday, friday the 7th of october.
Friday, that means matchday..
This day was planned a big Match.
The Highschool against the INDIANS.

The match began with much energy and it was an exciting match. We had a full stand.
Everything was fine!
And another Important aspect to tell is about Junior called Junior , who is an Indian , who left the rez , to go to our highschool.
It means this match was against his old school and also against his old Friend Rowdy.
For junior it was clear, that he is going to lose the match, because his trainer told him to cover Rowdy all the time, the whole match.
Rowdy did a good match with his team and Junior seemed helpless, but then, something unexpected has happenend.
Rowdy was running with the ball and wanted to throw it into the basket. Rowdy jumped. And then, it happened something, nobody expected. For the first time , Junior jumped. He jumped higher than Rowdy. Shock moment. Nobody thougt this could happen and it seemed like Junior was shocked, too. So Junior took the ball, ran to the other side, he fainted and then he jumped and threw the basketball into the basket.
Nobody thougt this.Neither junior , nor his mother, who fell in unconsciousness.
At the end Juniors team won.
It was an amazing match and also Juniors trainer is shocked about what junior is able to do.
