Summary up to chapter 19

The novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie and published in 2007 by Klett, is about the fourteen-year old Indian boy Arnold Spirit, called Junior, who gets away from his his daily life by changing to a school full of white people to follow his dreams and not to loose hope.

In the beginning Arnold starts telling the reader about his physical and psychological problems he has because of his brain damage.

We learn about his social background, family and friends, Rowdy and his dog Oscar who gets shooten by the father because he was ill and because of their poverty they couldn’t afford a vet.

Deeply sad about this, Arnold is seeking comfort from Rowdy. Then both go to the powwow celebration, where Arnold gets beaten up by the Andruss brothers. For revenge and to protect Arnold, Rowdy cuts of their braids.

The next chapter is placed in school. Arnold thinks about the past and realizes they were taught by the same books his mother already had. He gets really angry and smashes the book in his teachers face, accidentally breaking his nose. He is suspended from school but his teacher Mr. P visits him and advices him to leave the reservation if he doesn’t want to end up as all the others – hopeless.

Junior followed this advice and attended Reardan high, which is full of successful white people.

Rowdy gets to know this. In a rush of anger he punshes him and leaves him lying on the floor.

In the first day at Reardan high everybody stared at him, laughed about him and called him names. The worst are Roger and his friends. After a few days, he couldn’t stand it any more, so he punshes him in the face, which brought him respect. At his first day at school, he also met Penelope, who first ignored him but he already fell in love with her. He talks to Rowdy about his feelings but he is no help.

When Halloween comes, Junior dresses up as a homeless, just as Penelope to collect money. He wants to help her and also collects money in his reservation. Unfortunately he gets robbed and all the money is lost.

In the following chapter Junior reflects about how lonely and isolated he feels at school. Being treated unfair by a teacher, Gordy, a schoolmate, defends him making them friends.

He also gets to know from his mother that his sister Mary got married, his sister herself didn’t inform him. Later he received an e-mail where she tells him happily about her new life.

At Thanksgiving Junior misses Rowdy very much, because they always celebrated this together, but no don’t talk to each other any more. He draws a cartoon as a present for Rowdy and wants to give it to him at his house but Rowdys father was lying about Rowdys presence.

Back in school he goes to the toilet and hears someone vomiting in the next cabin, which made him trying to help. It comes out that it is Penelope, suffering from bulimia, what she finally admits breaking up in tears. Little by little they get closer to each other and become the hot item at school. Her father is not happy about this but finally has to accept it.

He realizes he has fallen in love and asks first Rowdy, then Gordy for advice.

He still feels not fully accepted because of being poor and living about twenty miles away form school, a distance he often made by feet. At the Winter Formal he has to wear his fathers old suit and can hardly afford anything. Penelope doesn’t care. Roger notices this and borrows him 40 dollars so he can buy some drinks and food and also invite Penelope. At the end of the evening, also Penelope realizes his poverty but instead of running away she kissed him.

He still misses Rowdy and sends him a photo. In return, he gets a mean photo of Rowdy. Junior feels that his people hate him for leaving the reservation and leading a different life. They compare him with an apple – red outside, white inside. This leaves him disappointed.

From her new life, far away from her reservation, his sister writes him a letter, complaining about none will give her a chance. She won’t get a job because of her lack of experience but none let her make the experience either.

Dear diary,

yesterday a new boy called Junior has came to my school. What a crazy name but maybe this is a normal name in the place from which he comes?  Whatever… Anyway “Junior” looks very ugly and I don´t know… he looks so different! He doesn´t fit in this school! And so I said to him:”Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” To be honest I don´t know why I have said this before all others and after this racist joke I have felt a little bit bad. A few seconds after this dumb joke Junior has hit me suddenly.First I was very shocked but then I begin to understand that it wasn´t ok  to say this to Junior or Arnold and so I wasn´t angry that Junior has hit me. Now I think it was fair and I deserve it. And today I saw Junior again and I said “Hey” and asked him “Who was that on the bike?” because a man with a cool bike brought him to school. We speaked a little bit and I said to him that the bike has looked cool and after that I said that I will see him around. I don´t say that that we will be best friends, but maybe we can get along because I regret it that I maked a racist joke and nobody deserves something like this and who knows? Maybe Junior is a nice guy and very cool?

Analysis:Love and Friendship(chapter 17)

Chapter “Dance, Dance, Dance” is aout Junior´s two different personalities and his secret that he is poor which Roger and Penelope find out.

When you read the first pages of this chapter you can observe that Junior doesn´t tell anybody from his new high school that he is poor(“I lied about how poor I was.” p.125 l.15). That shows that he has fear that someone could lough at him(“I was worried that people would make fun of me[…].” p.129 l.1) and so he doesn´t even tell it his girlfriend Penelope or his friend Roger. But it shows also that Penelope and Roger are very imporatnt for him because he want that they stay his friends and don´t think that he is poor or think something bad about him(“What would they think of me if they knew I sometimes had to hitchlike to school?” p.126 ll.4-5). This chapter also make clear that Junior loves Penelope really and he even goes to Winter Formal although he has only five dollars in his pocket because he doesn´t want that Penelope goes with somebody else to Winter Formal (“But I couldn´t skip Winter Formal. And if I didn´t take Penelope then she would have certainly gone with somebody else.” p.126 ll.16-17). But at the end  everything changes because Penleope asks Junior if he is poor and he tells her the truth. Penelope doesn´t react how Junior has thougt but rather she kisses him on the cheek. So it becomes clear to him that Penelope is a very good friend(“But then I realized that she was being my friend. Being a really good freind, in fact. She was concerne about me.” p.134 ll. 20-22). After Penelope tells Roger that Junior is poor he drives him home and Junior realizes that Roger and Penelope are very good people and friends and he also realizes that ” If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be damn amazing.” (p. 136 ll. 15-16).

Analysis of Junior

The diary “The Absolutely true Diary of a part -time Indian,” written by Sherman Alexie and published 2007, deals with a Indianboy named Arnold and his problems in school, life and with his poor family.

In the following I’m going to analyse Arnold Spirit Jr. and his feelings and his behavior.

Junior is round about 14 years old so he is in the middle of the puberty and is on the way to get an adult like every normal teenager (“I spend hours in the bathroom  with a magazine that has one thousand pictures of naked movie stars”, ll.9-10 p.35->puberty). But Arnold isn’t at all just a normal teenager he is something different. All teenagers are bored of school but he is excited in some way (“And I was most especially excited about my first geometry class”, ll. 2-3 p.35 ). Also you can see that Junior loves to masturbate and he tells it to everyone and isn’t ashamed because of this. So you can see that this is brave in a wierd way (“Yep, that’s right ; I admit that I masturbate. I’m proud of it. I’m good at it.  I’m ambidextrous”, ll.12-15 p.35). Another thing why Junior is wierd sometimes is that he has some strange habits. When he was eight he slept in his closet and only stopped it because his sister said that this is way to get back in his mother’s womb (ll.10-13 p.36). Maybe because of this Junior thinks that his sister Mary is good at ruining things (“My sister is good at ruining things”, l.19 p.36). In relation to this you could think that Junior doesn’t like his sister very much but not at all. He thinks that she is a very strong, beatiful and funny person(l.22 p.36). Junior says that ” [He is] not like her at all”, l.2 p.38, because he is steady, he is excited about life and he is excited about school (ll. 2-3 p.38). Arnold/Junior is a excited and steady person but he isn’t very self confident person and he doesn’t really believe himself (“[…] the bigger and better kids will crush me”, l.9 p.38). So he thinks that the other kids are better than him and that they give him a crap for being excited but he doesn’t care about that at all so he does his own thing (“And I know that the other kids are going to give me a crap for being so excited about school. But I don’t care”, ll.20-21 p.38). So you can see that Junior is very brave and excited about life and everything but in another way a little bit wierd. Another argument to call him wierd is that he calls himself a “bookkisser” so he loves to kiss, grab and smell them something like a fetish (” I grabbed my book and opened it up. I wanted to smell it. Heck, I wanted to kiss it. Yes, kiss it. That’s right, I am a book kisser”, ll.4-8 p.41).

All in all it can be said that Junior is a very happy and excited teenager who wants to learn something about life but sometimes is very wierd and also different than other kids.

Penelope

Penelope is a popular, white and beautiful girl at Reardan. She is close friends with Roger. But she has some big problems, she thinks that nobody takes her seriously, she feels lonely and her father is a racist, maybe that’s one of the reasons why she dates Junior. She wants to show her dad, that she isn’t a little and pretty girl. She has bulimia.
The friendship with Junior starts when he notices that Penelope also has problems. She tells Junior that her dream is to go away from Reardan, because it’s boring there, she wants to study architecture and to discover the world. Just as Junior but on another level.
The protest against the treatment of homeless people, shows that she is a social girl.
Penelope changes her behavior towards Junior because in the course of the novel she gets more open and Junior shows her that, she also can do it. Maybe Penelope doesn’t come closer to her dreams, but she has more hope for following and realizing her dreams as before the friendship with Junior.

Creative Writing: Dialogue between Mr.Dodge and the Coach

Mr. D:MR. Dodge, C: Coach

C: Hey, Mr. Dodge!                Mr. D: Hey Coach. How are you?        C:Fine, thanks. How are you?    Mr. D: Good!      C: I want to hera your opinion about Arnold and his personalities.     Mr. D: He is too much self-doubt.     C: Not more?       Mr. NO…..    C: I think he is also intelligent, a good drawer, a talent in basketball and a big fighter!      Mr. D: Maybe.   C: He must be more self-doubt in his game.  Mr. D: But not so much self-doubt in class. One tim he contradicted me. C:  OK, when you think so.   Mr.D: Yes. Bye and a nice day.   C: Bye

Analysis:The Rearden Teacher

I am going to analyse the Rearden teachers: Mr. Dodge, Mrs. Jeremy, Miss Warren and the coach. I start with Mr. Dodge who is the “science teacher” from Arnold. Mr. Dodge isnt a real science teacher. When the school hasnt enough money they must take other teachers and make them to a science teachers (p. 94 ll. 16-22). He is against Indian because on p. 93 Arnold contradicted him. He gets very fast red in the face and angry. But as an other student says the same Mr. Dodge gets in two seconds from blood red to snow white  in the face (p.94 ll.12-13) and he says “thank you” to this answer (p.95 l.6).                                                                                          Mrs Jeremy is the Rearden social studies teacher. When she makes a side commment about Juniors frequent absencesm, Gordy leads the class in a demonstration of defiance against her. Miss Warren  is the guidance counselor. She is fifty year old (p.204 l.26) but she is still pretty hot. She is all skinny and muscular becuase she jogged all the time (p.204 ll.26-29). Miss Warren gives Junior the news of Marys death and she cries at the same time (p.201 l.21). She is very emotional. The Coach of Juniors basketball team at Rearden High school treat his team with dignity and respect (p.144 ll.17-19). Coach becomes an impotant father figure for Junior. He admires Juniors attidude and supports his talent and potential in basketball.

Summary Chapter 15

The chapter is about Penelope’s problems of anorexics and how Junior and Penelope come closer.
It starts with Junior’s walk to the school toilet. Sitting on the toilet he hears some bad noises, like someone is vomiting. Then he knocks on the girls’ bathroom door, where the noises are from. A girl says that he should go away. So he goes but after a few meters he turns around and goes back. Shortly after, Penelope comes out of the bathroom, chomping on a bubble gum when Penelope asks him what he is looking at, he answers that he is looking at a bulimic. After he tells her that she should not give up she starts crying and tells Junior that she is lonley. The next few weeks the two become friends to the disapproval of Penelope’s dad and Junior gets a higher level in school, he is more popular. the teachers also show him more respect. One day Penelope tells him that she hates Reardan and that it is her dream to go away and to discover the world. She wants to study architecture with the intent to build something fabulous and being remembered. Junior says that he have the same dream, but for Penelope they are possible to reach. He likes her idea to go away, but he also says, that she has to eat more, if she wants to realize her dreams. He tells the readers that he loves to look and stare at the “crazy beautiful” Penelope.

Analysis chapter 2 “Why chicken means so much to me´´

In the following I am going to analyze Junior´s emotions and feelings.

The first stylistic device can be found on page 17, ,,I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation´´,ll.8 ,this example is an enumeration. This enumeration shows how sad Junior really feels. The reader becomes impressions of Junior´s daily life situation and about how poor he is.It seems like he feels like something that isn´t important for everyone. From line 14-15 the reader becomes impressions about junior´s empty stomach and what he would give to have a real meal again. He is sad and helpless.Furthermore the author uses a climax page 17 ,ll. 6 and 7 , ,,But I can’t do that.Nobody can do that, not even the hungriest magician in the world. In this example the author uses the climax to show, that Junior only wants to live a good life and not the life he is living. He just wants to be in a normal family and living in a family where food is something normal. On page 19 the author uses an enumeration to show that Oscar his dog really feels bad and that it makes him really sad, too.Junior is scared about losing Oscar, because it is the only one who truly understands him.He is really sad about Oscars situation and how he feels ,,I figured he´d be okay with some rest, but then he started vomiting, and diarrhea blasted out of him, and he had these seizures where his little legs just kicked and kicked and kicked. ´´ Moreover  there is a repetition ,,There was nothing I could do to save Oscar.Nothing.Nothing.Nothing´´,ll.14. By using this repetition the author gives the impression to the reader that Junior can’t do nothing at all.He is helpless.helpless and Sad by thinking about how Oscar has to die ,because of the family´s poorness, who can’t pay oscars medicines. On page 21 there is an alliteration ,,I wanted to punch my dad in the face.I wanted to punch him in the nose and make him bleed.I wanted to punch him in the eye and make him blind.I wanted to kick him in the balls and make him pass out.´´,ll.1. By using this stylistic device the reader really understands how important Junior to Oscar is.Junior is completely alone and there i really nobody who understands him.It becomes clear, that junior feels really aggressive by the thought of his dad. Another stylistic device is on page  21 in line 5 , ,,I was hot mad.Volcano mad.tsunami mad.´´, by using this climax the reader can see how aggressive, sad and lonely junior is. Nobody understands him and he only feels aggressive and disappointed by the thought what his parents are able to do with his dog oscar. The other alliteration is on page 21,too ,,I wanted to hate him for weakness.I wanted to hate Dad and Mom for our poverty.I wanted to blame them for my sick dog and for all the other sickness in the world.´´ll.8. By using this alliteration , the reader becomes part of Junior´s feelings about his parents and how much he hates the poorness.

In conclusion it can be said that Junior really feels sad.He feels lonely and he feels like nobody understands him.The lost of Oscar makes him feel lonelier than everything. Junior has nobody.
