Analysis chapter 24

The text at hand is an extract from the book “The Absolutely true Diary of a Part-Time Indian” written by Sherman Alexie in year 2007. The analysis is about chapter 24, which has the title “Valentine Heart”. It is about Junior´s father´s best friend Eugene and Junior´s feelings about this happening.

The first stylistic device is on page 174 in line 17 up to line 18: “My father went… My mother went…” , which is a parallelism. The author wants to emphazise that Junior´s parents don´t get grips with the death of their friend. A repitition can be found on page 174 in line 19: “(…)booze and God, booze and God, booze and God”. It shows that the whole life consists of booze and god. Furthermore the parallelism “I needed books. I wanted books.” (p.174, ll. 23) explains that Junior needs books to get grips with the death of Eugene. Another important stylistic device is on page 176 in line 1 (“And I drew and I drew and I drew(…)”), which is a repitition. It clarifies that drawing cartoons is for Junior the only way to handle the situation. The next stylistic device (” I was mad at God; I was mad at Jesus”, p.176, l. 2) is a parallelism and shows that he can´t believe in anybody anymore. Therefore another parallelism is on page 176 in line 7 up to line 8: “I wanted to find (…) I wanted to know(…)”, which is also a repitition ( I wanted(…) I wanted(…)”). It emphasizes how big his grief is about the death . After that a repition can be found on the same page in line 2 up to line 3 (” We lost(…) we lost(…) we lost(…)we lost(…) we lost(…)”). This intensifies that the Indians lost everything. The next repitition on page 178 in line 10 up to line 11 (“killed (…)killed (…) killed (…) killed”) shows that junior wants to kill everyone because of his desperation. Another important stylistic device is on the same page in line 29 (” Mrs. Jeremy was an old bird”), which is a metaphor and it expresses that Mrs. Jeremy teaches at Reardan for a real long time. Furthermore a repitition is in line 10 up to line 11 (” I would(…) I would(…) I would “) It intensifies that Junior did many things if he would be stronger.

In conclusion in my opinion it is difficult for Junior to handle the situation and he is searching for methods to get grips with the death of Eugene. Also his parents don´t know what to do and they process the death in different ways.

Creative 16 (diary entry by Junior´s father)

Dear diary,

normally I don´t write my feelings into a diary but now I don´t know with which person I could speak. A family´s good friend namend Eugene was killed by bobby. Bobby was Eugene´s friend. I can´t understand how you can shoot your friend!? I know, they both were drunk but this isn´t an excuse! I´m so sad about this incident and I don´t know how I should deal with the death of Eugene…At the moment I drown the pain in alcohol. Deep down inside me I know that it isn´t a way. Junior´s grandmother was killed by a drunk driver and Eugene is gone because he and his friend were drunk. Oh, wait. What is if someday i kill somebody because of my drunkenness?! I couldn´t forgive myself! And… Oh my God! If I go on like this maybe one day I will end like Eugene, so I will be killed. Then my familiy would be alone. Possibly I could die tommorow… What have I achieved in my life until now ?! Nothing. All what I did in my life was drinking! I think I have to stop drinking to protect my family and myself. I hope I will succeed. I will tell you more in a few days or weeks.

Summary chapter 24: Valentine Heart

Chapter 24 ” Valentine Heart” of the book ” The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie  in year 2007, is about the death of Junior´s father´s best friend, Eugene, and Juniors feelings about this happening . The reactions to this are diffrent: Junior´s father begins with much drinking, Junior´s mother goes to church and Junior impress his feeling with drawing cartoons while he shows how mad he is about God and Jesus. Later he thinks it is his fault, because he transfers to another school and left his family and friends alone in the rez. Junior doesn´t go a few days to school, but then he returns. In school his teacher Mrs. Jeremy says something hurtful to him. Therefore his class beginn a demonstration. Junior makes fun of that and tells his teacher that there are two types of people: these one who are assholes and this one who are not. In the end it all gives him hope again. Finally Junior makes lists of people and things, which give him the most joy in his life.

Diary entry

Dear diary,

today I found a cartoon from Junior and i was shocked when i saw it. He drew himself with lopsided eyes, a skinny body, big feet an big hands. I know that Junior has problems with his appearance, but i didn´t know that they are as big as they really are. I also have to say that the cartoon was also really funny, because it looked so strange! First I laughed about it but then it became clearly to me that Junior has a serious problem. Because of this I asked him about his problems, because I wanted to help him. Thus he told me about them and admitted what he felt in reality and how bullying effected him. He said that he tried not to take it seriously and didn´t hear to what the people said about him but it still had an effect on him. I thought I did my best to protect him but now I realize that I can not protective him all the time. I want to help him getting over his problems and I hope we will find a way together. I know it won´t become easy but I will do my best, because I´m his best friend.
