Dear diary,

yesterday a new boy called Junior has came to my school. What a crazy name but maybe this is a normal name in the place from which he comes?  Whatever… Anyway “Junior” looks very ugly and I don´t know… he looks so different! He doesn´t fit in this school! And so I said to him:”Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” To be honest I don´t know why I have said this before all others and after this racist joke I have felt a little bit bad. A few seconds after this dumb joke Junior has hit me suddenly.First I was very shocked but then I begin to understand that it wasn´t ok  to say this to Junior or Arnold and so I wasn´t angry that Junior has hit me. Now I think it was fair and I deserve it. And today I saw Junior again and I said “Hey” and asked him “Who was that on the bike?” because a man with a cool bike brought him to school. We speaked a little bit and I said to him that the bike has looked cool and after that I said that I will see him around. I don´t say that that we will be best friends, but maybe we can get along because I regret it that I maked a racist joke and nobody deserves something like this and who knows? Maybe Junior is a nice guy and very cool?

Analysis:Love and Friendship(chapter 17)

Chapter “Dance, Dance, Dance” is aout Junior´s two different personalities and his secret that he is poor which Roger and Penelope find out.

When you read the first pages of this chapter you can observe that Junior doesn´t tell anybody from his new high school that he is poor(“I lied about how poor I was.” p.125 l.15). That shows that he has fear that someone could lough at him(“I was worried that people would make fun of me[…].” p.129 l.1) and so he doesn´t even tell it his girlfriend Penelope or his friend Roger. But it shows also that Penelope and Roger are very imporatnt for him because he want that they stay his friends and don´t think that he is poor or think something bad about him(“What would they think of me if they knew I sometimes had to hitchlike to school?” p.126 ll.4-5). This chapter also make clear that Junior loves Penelope really and he even goes to Winter Formal although he has only five dollars in his pocket because he doesn´t want that Penelope goes with somebody else to Winter Formal (“But I couldn´t skip Winter Formal. And if I didn´t take Penelope then she would have certainly gone with somebody else.” p.126 ll.16-17). But at the end  everything changes because Penleope asks Junior if he is poor and he tells her the truth. Penelope doesn´t react how Junior has thougt but rather she kisses him on the cheek. So it becomes clear to him that Penelope is a very good friend(“But then I realized that she was being my friend. Being a really good freind, in fact. She was concerne about me.” p.134 ll. 20-22). After Penelope tells Roger that Junior is poor he drives him home and Junior realizes that Roger and Penelope are very good people and friends and he also realizes that ” If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be damn amazing.” (p. 136 ll. 15-16).

Summary chapter 17

The chapter “Dance,Dance,Dance”of the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Diary Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie in year 2007, is about the two different personalities of Junior and the chapter deals with Junior´s secret that he is poor and his friends Roger and Penelope find it out.

At the beginning of the chapter Arnold thinks about his two personalities. In Reardan he has a girlfriend and he is very cool but in the rez he is a handicapped person with poor parent and an aggressive best friend. After that Junior tells the reader that at Reardan Highschool everybody thinks that he has lots of money, but in reality his family is really poor. Normally it´s not too hard for him, but it´s December and in this month he takes Penelope to the Winter Formal and Arnold has only five dollars in his pocket. On the Winter Formal he wears his dad´s old suit and he has thougt that everybody would lough because of this suit, but Penelope loves it. Junior and Penelope dance togehther and it is Junior´s best night in his life and he is happy that nobody notices that he is poor. At the end of the party Roger, Penelope, Arnold and other friends from Roger decide to drive into Spokane and have pancakes at adinner. But Junior wishes that Penelope doesn´t want to go to the dinner because Junior has not enough money to buy her many things but his girlfriend Penelope want to go to the dinner. In the dinner Junior orders things he isn´t able to pay. After this he is going to the bathroom, because he feels bad and Roger goes to the bathroom too. Junior tells Roger that he has forgotten his wallet and Roger lends him forty dollars. Back at school Penelope asks Junior if he is poor and he tells her the truth. She kisses him and she tells that, what Arnold tells her, Roger who brings Junior home. He realizes that Penelope and Roger are really good friends and both swear they are not going to tell anybody his secret.

Analysis chapter 2

The second chapter “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me” of the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie published 2009, is about the poverty of Junior´s family and his dogs dead because of his illness.

In the following I am going to analyse the stylistic devices, Junior´s feelings and his emotions.  The first enumeration is on page 19(“He was lying on his bed with red, wattery, snotty eyes.”l.3) and this sentence draws attention to Oscar´s eyes. The next enumeration in ll.7-9 has the effect to focus the readers attention to the dog´s illness(“[…]he started vomiting, and diarrhea blasted[…]and he had […] and kicked and kicked.”ll. 7-9). The last stylistic device on this page is an enumeration again and it emphasizes that the dog was more important than his family for him(“[…] than my parents ,grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and big sister.”ll.11-13). In lines 15-18 on page 20 is an anaphora (“Nothing. Nothing.Nothing.”ll.15-18) and it highlights that he couldn´t do anything to help his dog. On the next page in ll.1-3 is a parallelism and anaphora(“I wanted to punch him[…]. I wanted to punch[…]. I wanted to punch him[…].”ll.1-3). This sentence shows Junior´s fury and emphazies it. The next stylistic device has the same effect and is a climax(“I was hot mad.Volcano mad. Tsunami mad.”l.5). In l.7 is an oter anaphora and in ll. 8-11.(“He […].He[…].l.7 and “I wanted to[…]. I wanted to […].”ll.8-11). This stylistic devices show that Junior is very angry and desperate because of his dog´s dead and their poverty. On page 23 is an anaphora again (“She[…]. She[…].ll.2-3). and in l.10 is a simile (“Lika a pro.”l.10). This simile creates a vivid mental image of Junior´s dad. The second last stylistic device on this page is in l.17 and is an anaphora(“It sucks to[…]. It sucks to[…].” l.17). It spells out that Junior´s and his family´s poorness makes he angry and he is strung out from. In l.25 on this page is an enumeration (“So, poor and small and weak[…].l.25). It describes Junior and because of this enumeration you kow how he feels in this situation. Last but not least is an anaphora on page 24 inll.5-6 (“I[…]. I[…].ll.3-6). It works like an little a comparison between Oscars emotions and felings that “he was relieved”(l.3) and Junior´s sentiments (” But not me. I[…]”. ll.5-6)

To Junior´s emotions and feelings you can say as aforementiond that he is very sad about his best friend´s dead and angry about his poorness(p.17 l.8-10 and p. 21 ll.9-11). He is very desperate and he thinks that he deserves to be poor because he is an Indian(p. 23 ll.17-22) .

Dear diary

Dear diary ,

today I found a cartoon of Junior. Normally I love his cartoons, because they are very funny and cool, but this cartoon has shocked me. It has shown Junior in a different way. In a ugly way. He has drawn himself with too big hands and feet, very skinny and his eyes were lopsided. Moreover there was a speechbubble which showed that he lisps and stutters. I think he sees himself too unattractive and I heared all too often how he said that he is a bastard and when I saw Junior’s cartoon I didn’t know what I could say too him. So I asked how he felt and why he drawed the cartoon thus. Junior responded that he has drawn the cartoon how he looks and he thinks that it is ok that he looks different. Also he said that he wishes or it would be easier to live in the rez when he would be prettier, but it is not so and he tries to live with his look. At the end he told me that make fun and draw cartoons about himself are the only ways to cope with his disabilitys. Certainly I get worried because of Junior, but I think it is  good or helpful for him to draw and furthermore he has me and I will always stand his side and I try that he forgets his problems by doing funny thing with me.
