Chapter 23

In the following, I am going to summarise Chapter 23 of the novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, which is written by Sherman Alexie an published in 2007.

Chapter 23 is about Arnold’s Grandmother’s wake three days after her death. Junior and his family are surprised because two thousand Indians show up and no one beats Junior up.                               They are so many people that they have to move the whole wake to a football field to have enough space.

In the course of the wake, a billionaire named Ted makes a speech about his love for Indians and theirs culture pointing out that he loves indian art, collects it and he has a beautiful powwow dance outfit he wants to give back to Grandmother Spirits’ family because he thinks, she once owned and danced with it, to take farewell of Grandmother Spirit.                                                  Ted feels guilty because he did not give the outfit back to her and he now wants to give it back. Arnold’s mother goes to Ted and after she took a look at it she says that Ted has no reason to feel guilty or apologize because her mother never danced with or owned an outfit like this. She also says that the outfit doesn’t even look Indian.

After Billionaire Ted heard that, Ted packs up and leaves the wake.

Junior’s mother starts laughing and everyone laughs with her.                                                                       They finally say goodbye by laughing and crying a long time.
