Chapter 27

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Chapter 27

In this chapter called “Because Russian Guys Are Not Always Geniuses”, Junior talks about death and funerals. Another aspect in this chapter is the death of his sister. At the beginning he talks about his classmates who don’t know so many dead people as Arnold. He is a young boy and knows so much about dying. He lives in a reservation where everybody dies because of being drunk. In this chapter Miss Warren says to Junior that his sister died. Arnold cannot understand this really inconvenient truth. Junior is allowed to go home but he needs to wait for his father who comes to pick him up with his car. It snows and Junior is scared of this fact, he thinks his father could be dead, but he is only too late. In the car, Arnold’s Dad tells him that his sister died in a fire. She was having a party and someone left the hot plate on. A curtain caught on fire, and everything burned down. His sister wouldn’t have felt any pain because she was too drunk. Then they go to the funeral of Junior’s sister and after that, he runs out of the cathedral into the forest. He runs straight into Rowdy who cries and says, that it is his fault that his sister died. His sister goes away and got married a short time after Junior goes to Reardan. Junior is shocked about that because in a strange way it is true. But at school Arnold is also surprised about the reactions of the other students at Reardan. They are very polite, they hug him and say that they feel sorry.
