Analysis Chapter 2

The novel “The Absolutely true diary of a Part-Time Indian”,written by Sherman Alexie and published in September 2007, is about a poor and disabled Indian boy, who tries to change his life by transfering from his old  reservation school to a normal school out of the reservation.  The author is writing out of Arnolds perspective, first person narrator.

Arnold is using several stylistic devices to describe his emotions and his situation. Arnold is using a repetition (ll.3/8 ” I wish “), that shows that he is desperate abd he is somehow looking for miracle. When describing his sick dog he is using  an enumeration and a simile (ll.3-4 “He was laying on his bed with red, watery, snory eyes .He whimpered in pain. (…), he yelped like crazy.”)Both stylistic devices make clear how muich his dog,Oscar,is suffering.

In line 11-13 Arnold is using an enumeration(“He was more dependable than my parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins and big  sister”),which describes that Arnold loves his dog more than any other person.

After his mother said “no” to take Oscar to the vet, because they dont hace enough money, Arnold makes the proposal to get a job.But Arnold`s  rhetorical question (c.t 7-8) shows , that he knows it`s an absurd idea, but nevertheless he would do everything for his dog.The repetetion of the word nothing “nothing”(ll.15,16,17) explains that Arnold is very angry and desprit, because of his helplessnes and his poverty.

When Arnold`s father wants to kill Oscar, because he is suffering Arnold becomes very mad.To make clear that he is angry he is using an enumeration and a climax (ll.1-3,5).At the end of the chapter Arnold`s dog Oscar died.

In conclusion it can be said that, Anrold suffers from being disabled as well as from being poor. When his family has no money to save his dog, which he calls his best friend, Arnold gets desperate and angry. He loves his dog more then any other person in the world, so his death is very tragic to Arnold.

Analysis chapter 2

The second chapter “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me” of the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie published 2009, is about the poverty of Junior´s family and his dogs dead because of his illness.

In the following I am going to analyse the stylistic devices, Junior´s feelings and his emotions.  The first enumeration is on page 19(“He was lying on his bed with red, wattery, snotty eyes.”l.3) and this sentence draws attention to Oscar´s eyes. The next enumeration in ll.7-9 has the effect to focus the readers attention to the dog´s illness(“[…]he started vomiting, and diarrhea blasted[…]and he had […] and kicked and kicked.”ll. 7-9). The last stylistic device on this page is an enumeration again and it emphasizes that the dog was more important than his family for him(“[…] than my parents ,grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and big sister.”ll.11-13). In lines 15-18 on page 20 is an anaphora (“Nothing. Nothing.Nothing.”ll.15-18) and it highlights that he couldn´t do anything to help his dog. On the next page in ll.1-3 is a parallelism and anaphora(“I wanted to punch him[…]. I wanted to punch[…]. I wanted to punch him[…].”ll.1-3). This sentence shows Junior´s fury and emphazies it. The next stylistic device has the same effect and is a climax(“I was hot mad.Volcano mad. Tsunami mad.”l.5). In l.7 is an oter anaphora and in ll. 8-11.(“He […].He[…].l.7 and “I wanted to[…]. I wanted to […].”ll.8-11). This stylistic devices show that Junior is very angry and desperate because of his dog´s dead and their poverty. On page 23 is an anaphora again (“She[…]. She[…].ll.2-3). and in l.10 is a simile (“Lika a pro.”l.10). This simile creates a vivid mental image of Junior´s dad. The second last stylistic device on this page is in l.17 and is an anaphora(“It sucks to[…]. It sucks to[…].” l.17). It spells out that Junior´s and his family´s poorness makes he angry and he is strung out from. In l.25 on this page is an enumeration (“So, poor and small and weak[…].l.25). It describes Junior and because of this enumeration you kow how he feels in this situation. Last but not least is an anaphora on page 24 inll.5-6 (“I[…]. I[…].ll.3-6). It works like an little a comparison between Oscars emotions and felings that “he was relieved”(l.3) and Junior´s sentiments (” But not me. I[…]”. ll.5-6)

To Junior´s emotions and feelings you can say as aforementiond that he is very sad about his best friend´s dead and angry about his poorness(p.17 l.8-10 and p. 21 ll.9-11). He is very desperate and he thinks that he deserves to be poor because he is an Indian(p. 23 ll.17-22) .

Comment Task

In the first chapter, Junior says, “the only way to become rich and famous” is through his artwork (comp p. 15, l. 18). Therefore, I’m going to evaluate, if or if not, Junior could become rich and famous.

First of all, I do think that he can become rich and famous. Although he has disabilities. Other people rise to fame, too, and realise their hopes and dreams. If you take Vethany Hamilton, a surfer who had lost one of her arms after a shark attack, as an example, you can clearly see, that disabilities don’t always limit you. Just because she lost her arm, it didn’t stop her from surfing. And just because Junior looks weird and has seizures, that doesn’t mean, he can’t make it, too.

But Junior doesn’t seem to believe in himself. And if he graduates at Reardan High School, he is almost sure to have higher chances.

However, a good education doesn’t always matter that much to become rich and famous. Sometimes it depends on your skills a lot more. And Junior has these skills. He just needs to show them and not be ashamed of them.

Comment

In the following text I will comment on the quote that Junior says in first chapter: ” That is the only way I can become rich and famous” .

The first con argument is that Junior is an Indian and he is also sick, so he gets bullied by other people and nobody would be interested in looking at his cartoons. The problem about this is that, if nobody see his cartoons he cannot become famous and rich.

But Junior is funny because he makes jokes about himself and about his disease, which shows to people that handicap need not be something to be ashamed of and that the handicap can be advantage. This feature is also very imortant to be a drawer.

All in all i think taht his cartoons are very funny and they are also true, so his cartoons are good and I think that he, with a little bit of luck and lot of work, can become rich and famous. I also think that all people on the world sholud have dreams and they should follow their dreams. So my message is, work hard and believe in yourself so your dreams can become true.

Comment task chapter 1

Dear diary,

today i found a cartoon, Junior drew of himself. It shows him with his disabilities in a very exaggerated way and him making fun of himself. Junior told me how he feels about his disabilities and how he feels about himself. He said, he hates it that everybody picks on him and beats him up just because he is different. I totally understand him. Every time he gets beat up, I feel really bad for him because I see how defenseless and weak-minded Junior is and that because of that I always have to help him out. Not that I would mind. Junior is my best friend. He is the only person who understands me. But Junior doesn´t have any self-confidence when its about defending himself and I think he should learn being that for his own good. On the other hand I believe Junior´s life isn´t very easy and that he just has a struggle accepting himself as he is. I think that he thinks nobody likes him the way he is but that isn´t true. Well maybe I´ll try to convince him to accept himself.

See you soon,

Rowdy

Comment

Reffering to the cartoons, Junior says: ‘‘ That is the only way I can become rich and famous ‘‘, in the first chapter.

In the following text I will evaluate/comment on this quote.

To begin with, I would say that it is pretty hard to become famous as a cartoonist because there are many rivals so you have to be very good to be better than the others. Let’s suppose he is good enough in drawing I think that he wouldn’t dispite become famous because of his physical and emotional conditions. For example Junior has seizures. This could be a problem because when he would present one of his cartoons and has a seizure then the viewers would go away. However, I believe that his biggest problem would be his social background. Why?

Junior is an Indian so he gets bullied by others and nobody would be interested by looking at his cartoons. The problem: when nobody looks at his cartoons he cannot become famous.

All in all I believe that Junior cannot become famous as drawer because of his conditions and his social background.

Analysis Chapter 2

The novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, written by Sherman Alexie and published in year 2007, is about Arnold (also called  Junior), a fourteen year old Indian boy who writes about his live in the rez and what experiences and feelings he has especially by suffering from his physical and psychological damages.

In chapter 2, which is called “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me”, Arnold tells about his family’s poverty and how it suffers from hunger which is also the conection to the chapter’s title because he describes how happy somebody can be having a chicken to eat after a long time whithout anything. In addition to that the story about the death of Arnold’s dog Oscar underlines the poverty and at the same time the sadness he lives in because the reason was that they hadn’t enaugh money to pay the vet.

In the following I am going to analyse the stylistic devices in a part of chapter 2 (p. 17-21) and their effects. At the beginning there is a repitition: “[…] I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation.”(p.17, ll.8-10). This sentence stresses Arnold’s pent-up anger and that he feels as if he is imprisoned in poverty. Arnold uses irony and retorical questions while speaking about himself maybe to stay strong and not becoming completely depressed: “And now I’m sure you’re asking, ‘Okay, okay, Mr. Hunger Artist, Mr. Mouth-Full-of Words, Mr. Woe-Is-Me, Mr. Secret Recipe, what is the worst thing about being poor?'”(p.18, ll.2-4). More repititions can be found on page 20 to 21, e.g.: “There was nothing I could do to save Oscar. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.” (p. 20, ll. 14-17). Those repititions always underline his feelings, in this example the frustration about Oscar’s death. Combinated with a repitition, there is finally a Hyperbole and comparison: “I was hot mad. Volcano mad. Tsunami mad.” (p. 21, l.5).

All in all the stylistic devices give an insight into Arnold’s feelings and make it possible to the reader to understand him.

Analysis chapter 2

In the following im going to analyse Arnolds feelings and his emotional conditions in chapter two.

In this chapter Arnold´s dog, Oscar, dies, which is even worse for Arnold, considering that Oscar is Arnold´s best friend(p. 18, l. 6). Oscar is suffering of heat exhaustion and he is feeling so bad, that Arnold wants to take him to the vet. The problem is that Arnold´s family is poor and can´t afford it to take Oscar to the vet. Arnold gets very angry and hates his family´s poverty even more(p. 21, ll. 5, p.23, l.17). He thinks Oscar is a better person than any human he had ever known(p. 19, ll. 15+16). The fact that he hasn´t got any friends except Rowdy makes it even more impossible for Arnold to let Oscar go because Oscar was with him all the time and if the family wouldn´t have been so poor, then Oscar could have lived on. Oscar´s illness and the family´s poverty lead to the solution to shoot Oscar to take him his pain. Arnold doesn´t agree with his parent´s idea at all and gets really mad when his father gets his rifle and tells Arnold to carry Oscar outside(p. 20, ll. 24- 27, p.21, l. 5). Arnold´s problem is that he can´t blame his parents because it´s not their fault they are poor. Arnold and his family have accepted the life in poverty( p. 17, ll. 11-17) and he only really seems to think about and hate his poverty when something bad happens that could have be prevented if the family wasn´t poor. For example he says that his parents both had dreams but they couldn´t follow them because they are poor(p. 23, ll. 14-16).

Arnold uses alot of anaphoras in connection with his poverty to highlight and underline his social situation(p. 17, ll. 8-10:” I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation.”).Also he uses neologisms to underline the message and make a vivid mental image(p. 18, ll. 2-3,:” Okay, okay, Mr. Hunger artist, Mr. mouth-full-of-words, Mr. Woe-is-me, Mr. Secret Recipe, what is the worst thing about being poor?”). This chapter underlines Arnold´s familys poverty the most because the chapter describes Oscar´s death which just happened because of Arnold´s parents poverty. To underline that there is a repetition(p.20, ll.15-17,:”Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.”).  After that the author uses a metaphor to express Arnold´s dependance of his parents(p.21,ll.12-14). With this metaphor it´s clear that Arnold needs his parents and that when Oscar is dead, he will need them even more.

All in all, there can be said that this chapter is a lot about poverty and about the hard life and disadvantages of being poor. It is described how sad and frustrating the life in poverty is and how hard it is to accept it.

Analysis Chapter 2

The novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian” written by Sherman Alexie was published in the year 2007. It deals with the young boy Arnold called “Junior” who lives with his poor family in a reservation. In this novel Arnold tells the reader his problems in his daily life.

In the following I will analyse the feelings and emotions of Arnold in the second chapter “Why chicken means so much to me”. At the beginning of the second chapter Arnold tells something about his passion to draw cartoons (p. 17 l.1). He whises that he can make his cartoons real, that he draws something magical. So he is very sad as he realises that nobody can do this and that he is just a “poor-ass” reservation kid (p. 17 ll.7-8). On this part the author uses the stylistic form anaphora. That underlines how unhappy Arnold is because the word “poor-ass” is very often repeated. After that Arnold tells the reader something about the worst thing about being poor (p.18 l.4). He tells that his best friend Oscar, the dog, became really sick. Oscar means so much to Arnold. He was more dependabel than the parents or the gandmother (p.19 ll.11-12). So it was a shock for Arnold that his poor Indian family has not enough money for the vet (p.19 l.11-p.20 ll.1-2). That was a very sad situation for Arnold because he has not any chance to help his best friend. In this moment it was clear that Arnold was very desperate. That illustrates the anaphora on page 20 line 15-17. “Nothing. Nothing. Nothing”. The dad of Arnold tries to help Oscar and he shoots him down (p.24 ll.7-9). During this sad situation Arnold uses a lot of rhetorical questions (p.17 l.11/p.18 l.4/l.10). That has the effect that the reader is more influenced into the story. In the last part of the second chapter Arnold tells something about his parents and their unrealised dreams (p.23 ll.1-22). His mum is very intelligent. ” And she remembers everything she reads. She can recite whole pages by memory. She’s a human tape recorder”(p.23ll.2-4). After that he tells something about his dad who is a very good singer and musician (p.23 ll.8-10). It sounds a little bit that Arnold is a little bit proud about his parents but in the next lines it is also clear how desperate Arnold is. “But we reservation Indians don’t get to realize our dreams. We don’t get those chances. Or choises. We’re just poor. That’s all we are.[…] to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you’re poor because you’re stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you’re stupid and ugly because you’re Indian. […]. It’s an ugly circle and there’s nothing you can do about it”(p.23 ll.14-22).

In conclusion I can say that in this second chapter the feelings of Arnold are very clear described. It is good comprehensible why Arnold is desperate. The stylistic devices help the reader to be more included in the story and it is easier to follow it. I would say that this chapter is important for the next course because in this chapter there are some important information about Arnold’s family and the hard blow, the loss of the best friend Oscar.

Comment

In this comment I will discuss, if Arnold only can become famous and rich if he draws cartoons.

I think he can get famous with his cartoons, because most time they are very funny and have an interesting drawing style. When you argument that he has lower chances to get rich because he is an Indian, I would say that this cannot stop him .This is because I think this attribute can also help him, it makes him some kind of special and gives him a thing where you can think of HIM.

But I think there are also other ways he can get a better live than drawing Cartoons. The Source where we get all his information [“The Absolutely True Diary of a part-time Indian”] is the existing proof that there are also other possibilities: He can write down his live story and get famous and rich.
