Diary entry

Dear diary,

today was a strange day… I knew that Junior has many problems with his appearance but when he told me about it more datailed today, I was very shocked. I have to admit that the cartoon was funny and as always I was able to laugh about it. I think it is a good help for Junior to tell his worries to somebody else , just to get it off his mind. I am that sure about it because after our little talk he already seemed to be a bit less sad. Although I am not really good at it, I’ll try to be a good friend and help for him because he means so much to me.

Rowdy’s diary entry

Dear Diary,

today was a strange day. I found Juniors cartoon and I was very shocked. I konw that Junior has many problems and his life in the reservation is not very easy, but that he really thinks that he is the biggest retard in the world was new to me. Actually I thought that his cartoons are funny and I was able to laugh about it. But now I know that this is Juniors way to tell his feelings and his true mind to the world. He told me that he thinks that pictures can tell more than words because words are too limited. And now I realised that. I was shocked about the cartoon about his self-portrayal. This picture was so expressive. I think I can’t imagine how hard it is to live with this problems for example the stutter and lisps or very big hands and feet. Although he has really big hands and feet;) Anyway that is no reason to offend him. I hope that I can protect him the next time. And I hope that I can give him the feeling that he is a cool friend.

See you tomorrow Rowdy

Diary entry

Dear diary!

Today I saw a carton of Junior with big hands and feets and also with a skinny body.I was scared and sad about it that he draws himself in such a ugly and depressive  way.I think he should be more self-confident and happier, but I also know he is very sad because living in the rez and be so poor and his family, too!Another thing is the situation with Oscar.Oscar was Juniors best friend with me.Never the less I try to be the best friend for him and protect him as well.Maybe I say him that he should be happier and also self-confident.All in all he is my best friend and helps me a lot and I think he can do something because he is very powerfull, funny and intelligent.

Analysis Chapter 2

In the following I’m going to analyse Arnold`s feelings and emotions in the chapter “Why chicken means so much to me” and explain his emotional conditions. In this connection I will look closer at his language and the stylistic devices used in the text.

It’s very obvious that especially in this chapter Arnold uses a lot a of repetitions to stress his statements and to make them memorably. For example on page 17, ll. 8-10: “[…], but I’m really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane indian Reservation.”. This shows that he is not happy about being poor because he connects “poor” with “ass”, which is a negative word.

This thought gets more clear in the following of the Chapter, where he tells us about the fate of his dog Oscar, who was very important to him. This is shown with the enumaration on page 19, ll. 12-14. But one day Ocar got sick . Arnold makes use of the repetition/ anaphora “Nothing.Nothing.Nothing” (p.20), which demonstrates how desperate and hopeless he was because he couldn’t do anything to save the life of his dog. The next anaphora expresses his anger towards his dad ( p21, ll. 8-10: “I wanted to […].I wanted to […].I wanted to […]”), because he decided to end the suffer of Oscar by shooting him. But he says that he knows that he can’t blame his parents. In this context he makes use of the methaphor “[…]my mother and my father are the twin suns around which I orbit and my world would EXPLODE without them.”and the concurrent exaggeration “EXPLODE” to stress the relevance of his parents for him. As he said they are as important for him as the sun, because just like nobody and nothing could live/survive without the sun, Arnold could not live without his parents. Another aspect needed to be focused on is the fact that the most used word in this chapter is “poor” ( almost in every page) -because it’t the main topic-,connected with a lot of negative and agressive words like “hate” (p.21), “blame” (p.21), “pain”(p.24) , “nothing”, “cry” etc., to  produce a bad emotion, so the reader is forced to associate a negative feeling with the word  “poor”. But there are still some postive words like “(to) dream” (p.21) and “believe”, “trust”  and “love”, to show that there is still hope left.

Dear diary

Dear diary ,

today I found a cartoon of Junior. Normally I love his cartoons, because they are very funny and cool, but this cartoon has shocked me. It has shown Junior in a different way. In a ugly way. He has drawn himself with too big hands and feet, very skinny and his eyes were lopsided. Moreover there was a speechbubble which showed that he lisps and stutters. I think he sees himself too unattractive and I heared all too often how he said that he is a bastard and when I saw Junior’s cartoon I didn’t know what I could say too him. So I asked how he felt and why he drawed the cartoon thus. Junior responded that he has drawn the cartoon how he looks and he thinks that it is ok that he looks different. Also he said that he wishes or it would be easier to live in the rez when he would be prettier, but it is not so and he tries to live with his look. At the end he told me that make fun and draw cartoons about himself are the only ways to cope with his disabilitys. Certainly I get worried because of Junior, but I think it is  good or helpful for him to draw and furthermore he has me and I will always stand his side and I try that he forgets his problems by doing funny thing with me.

Analysis: Chapter 2

The chapter “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me” of the diary “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, which is written by Sherman Alexie was published in September 2007, deals with Arnold’s feelings about poorness and his family’s situation and also the feelings about his dog.

In the following im going to analyse Junior’s feelings and his language.

In the beginning of the chapter Junior tells the reader about his cartoonist career and about his cartoons in general. He says that “[his] cartoons will never take the place of food or money”, (ll.2-3 p.17) in his life. So he wants to tell the reader that in his opinion he’s not a very good cartoonist. He wishes that his cartoons could be real, so he draws something for example food and then he could eat it. But he knows that nobody can do something like that because it is megical. He describes this with a Alliteration (“But I can’t do that. Nobody can do that, not even the hungriest magician in the world”, ll.6-7 p.17). Also you can see that he’s not very self confident and also depressive because of his situation in the reservation and the poverty of his family (“[…] I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation”, ll.8-10 p.17). He wishes that his situation would be better sometime and “[his] parents will come bursting trough the door with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken”, ll.15-17 p.17. But Junior is not only depressive because of the poverty, also he is depressive because of his dog and bestfriend Oscar died. Junior thinks that he was the best and most dependaple living thing in the world (enumeration:”[…]but he was the only living thing that I could depend on. He was more dependable than my parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and big sister. He thaught me more than any teachers ever did”, ll.10-14 p.19). But in the end he knows that he could do nothing to heal Oscar because of the poorness (Alliteration:”There was nothing I could do to save Oscar.Nothing.Nothing.Nothing”, ll.14-17 p.20).

So all in all you can see that Junior is not very self confident and also depressive because of the problems with his family and his life in general but he has hope that it would be better one day.

Analysis chapter 2

The diary “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” written by Sherman Alexie was published in September 2007. The second chapter is about the poverty of Junior and his hole family.
The chapter can be divided into two paragraphs. The first paragraph is about the wish of Junior who wants to buy Kentucky Fried Chicken, but isn´t able to because it´s to expensive (p.17-18). The second paragraph tells about Juniors best friend, his dog Oscar, who becomes ill and the parents can´t pay the vet,so they decide to shoot the dog down.

Now I´m going to analyse Juniors feelings, emotional conditions and his language.

“Okay, so now you know Í´m that I´m a cartoonist.” (p.17, l.1) says Junior. He shows us that he can describe his feelings better by drawing cartoons. The repitition “poor-ass”  (p.17, ll.8ff) underlines his lack off self-confidence. It also expresses his and their parents poverty. With the exaguration “And believe me, a good piece of chicken can make anybody believe in the existence of God.” (p.17, ll. 22f), he makes his wish of eating some chicken clearer. In the following he tells us that being hungry is just one bad thing about being poor (c. p. 18, l1). “So, okay, I´ll tell you the worst thing. Last week, my best friend Oscar got really sick.” (p.18, ll. 5f) speeks Junior. With this he makes sure that his dog is more important to him than his own hunger problems. “Honestly, Oscar was a better person than any human I had ever known.” (p.19, ll15f), with this he underlines this again. At next a conversation starts between Junior and his parents. His parents tell him that they can´t pay the vet because it will be to expensive (c. p.20, ll.1f). Junior tries to convince them by saying he´ll get a job and  pay the vet back later on (c. p.20, l5) . After a while he feels he can´t convince them “There was nothing I could do to save Oscar. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.” (p20, ll14ff). With this repetition his desparation gets clear. His father wants him to carry Oscar outside and wants to shoot him down (c. p.20,ll24ff.). He thinks it will help Oscar because when he´s dead he doesn´t have to suffer anymore (c. p.20,l26). “I want to hate[…]. I want to hate […]. Iwant to blame […]. (p.21, ll8ff.). This parallelism underlines his desparation aswell. On the one hand he is really angry of his parents but on the other hand he can´t blame them because they aren´t guilty for their poverty and his world would “explode” (p.21, l14) without them (c. p.21, ll11ff).

To put it in a nutshell he seems to be really depressed person and he needs more self-confidence. without is friend he gets more sad and looses a really important part of his life.

Diary entry

Dear diary,

I’ve got so much to tell you. Today, in the morning, I found a cartoon, Junior has drawn. I actually like his cartoons but this one shows him with very long arms and legs and feet and in a speechbubble above his head he shows his stutter ans lisp. I always knew that he doesn’t like himself that much but but I didn’t know that he sees himself like the bigges retard in the world.

A while after I found his cartoon, I went to his house and lalked with him about it. When I asked him about that cartoon, he first got angry, but after that he got weak and broke, so he told me everything. I would really like to help him, so that he can feel batter. I know that I can protect him from others, so that he doesn’t get bullied, but I can’t do anything else expect for listening to him.

I will report later or in a few days and I hope I can help him in any way.

See you soon,

Rowdy

Diary Entry Rowdy

Dear diary,

today it was a strange day.I knew that Junior has many problems with his appearance. But when he told me about it in detail today, I was very shocked. I have to admit that the cartoon was funny and as always I was able to laugh about it. But I also had to talk about that with him. He admitted what he truly feels and how the bullying effects him. Junior told me that he tries to do not take it seriously but it still an effect on him. I always stay behind him and protect him. I find it good that he goes with a smile trough the world and not with a bad smile! He makes the best of his physical problems!

See you tomorrow 🙂

FGSchueler5's avatarThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

I think Arnold´s Disabilities are no problem for him to get rich and famous. Many people who are rich and famous have disabilities for example Steven Hawking. But some people have preconception so they wouldn´t accept some rich and famous guy with disabilities.      Also he probably would get bullied in the public by haters who don´t grant him the glory and the achievments. So all in all I think he could get famous but with some restrictions. And I would definitely grant him his famous.
